5 Tips for Choosing a DIY Hydroponics Project

Choosing the best DIY hydroponics project for you is an important decision. Here are some things you may want to consider in making your choice.

Your space: Do you have a small space with just enough room for a vertical hydroponic system? There are several types of DIY hydroponic projects you can fit into a very small space. Or do you have plenty of room to spread out and build something more substantial? There are lots of options but if you're a beginner, start small and “get your feet wet” before spending a lot of money, time and energy on your project. You could do a project called “nutrient film technique” which allows nutrients to continually flow over the roots of your plants. Or you might consider a space saving vertical aeroponic system that pumps a spray of nutrient water onto the roots of your plants at regular intervals. Both can be done in a very small space.

Your budget: There are DIY hydroponics projects that can fit just about any budget. Some can be done using primarily equipment you probably already have on hand. However, you will need to spend money on a few things, such as pump, timer, nutrients and ph tester. The easiest and cheapest method is called the “wick system” but generally this should be used for small plants and on a small scale. Delivery of nutrients to the roots is slower than in some of the other hydroponics methods.

Your experience and commitment: Do you want a project you can throw up in just a few hours and then not have to fuss over? Or are you someone who wants to check the nutrients and ph every day and hover over your project. There are projects that will work for you no matter what your style may be. Are you a seasoned Do-it-Yourselfer with experience building other types of projects? DIY hydroponics may require some basic knowledge and experience with plumbing, electricity, carpentry as well as some basic gardening skill. The method known as the “drip irrigation hydroponic system” is probably one of the most complicated but most of the methods have versions that range from less complicated to more complicated.

Your plans for what you'd like to grow: Are you more interested in growing something like lettuce or herbs that will give you a harvest very quickly? Or are you more interested in growing some more complicated crops such as strawberries or tomatoes? Your choice of a DIY hydroponics project will be highly influenced by what you want to grow. The “ebb and flow” system works quite well for things like tomatoes, while strawberries do better with “nutrient film technique” (NFT). Most other plants aren't too fussy about how they are grown.

Your climate: Do you live where it's relatively easy to set up and maintain a hydroponics project either indoors or outdoors? Is it too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter to be successful? Keep this in mind as you choose your project. If you live where there is intense heat in the summer, you may need to consider protection from the sun. If it's very rainy, you may need to consider rain protection by building your project indoors or inside of a hoop house or greenhouse.

As winter will soon be upon us, I am experimenting with the wonderful world of hydroponics so I can have some fresh veggies during the off season, ON THE CHEAP!

Hydroponics is a lot simpler than it first seems. Liquid nutrients deliver regular and consistent food to the plants on a timed schedule and therefore producing an ideal growing situation for bigger and faster fruit production than soil! Also because there is no soil, the system runs cleaner and much smaller pots can be used as we are only need to accommodate space for the roots and some media (rock wool and hydro pellets) for support.

All that is needed is:
-Hydroponic cup
-A rock wool plug
-Clay pellets for added substrate
-Aquarium air pump
-Air tubing
-Air tubing relief valve
-Inverted water bottle, with bottom cut off, sized for the Hydro pot
-Plastic cup to hold water bottle
-Power drill to drill holes in the bottle caps

During winter, this set up will need an artificial light source, but this was a trial filmed in July 2009, so there is sufficient sun intensity and duration in the window sill for now!

Hydroponics growing system: How to build a DIY Aeroponics growing system using a 5 Gallon Bucket. There are many forms of hydroponics growing systems out there. This video will show you step by step how to build an aeroponics growing system.

Aeroponics is a system where the roots are suspended in an environment saturated with fine drops, mist or fog of a nutrient solution. The method entails periodically wetting the roots of the growing plants with a fine mist of nutrients. The growing plants with their roots suspended in a deep air or growth chamber receive excellent aeration and a moist environment. This is the main advantage of aeroponics.

Another distinct advantage of aeroponics over other hydroponics growing systems is that any species of plant can be grown. In an aeroponic system the micro environment can be finely controlled. This addresses many of the limitations of other hydroponics growing systems. In other hydroponics growing systems certain species of plants can survive before they become waterlogged. This means that you can grow plants longer and faster, because aeroponics is that suspended aeroponic plants receive 100% of the available oxygen and carbon dioxide to the roots zone. This will accelerate biomass growth and reduce rooting times. Aeroponic techniques have been proven to be commercially viable for propagation, seed germination, seed potato production, tomato production, leaf crops, and micro-greens. The success of aeroponics has even recognized by NASA.

NASA researchers have been analyzing many soilless growing methods for the space program, including hydroponics. Aeroponics growing systems receive special attention from NASA since a mist is easier to handle than a liquid in a zero gravity environment. Their research into aeroponics has all shown that aeroponically grown plants have an 80% increase in dry weight biomass compared to hydroponically grown plants. They also concluded that aeroponics use less water than other hydroponics growing systems. Aeroponics is also widely used in laboratory studies of plant physiology and plant pathology.

What is hydroponics?

Hydroponics is a soilless growing technique were growing of plants are placed into a system that delivers nutrient rich water directly to the roots. Instead of soil, Plants are often supported by an inert substrate such as rockwool, hydroton, coconut coir, and many others. A flood and drain, mist, or air stone provides oxygen to the root system to keep the plants from drowning. A hydroponics growing systems success is based on the fine control of the environment. This makes a hydroponics growing system perfect for growing indoors as well as outdoors.

Final Results – Hydroponic Fertilizer Experiment



I've been working on an experiment comparing water soluble fertilizers for hydroponic growing. Here is how it began: http://youtu.be/oeLd2SP0c6U The final results are in. When it comes to hydroponics, Miracle Grow is not recommended because it has a form of nitrogen that is best suited for use in the soil. It does poorly in a hydro application. The 4-18-38 hydroponic fertilizer that I have been using for awhile now absolutely kicks butt. My recommendation for anyone wanting to grow hydroponic vegetables is this: find a true hydroponic fertilizer to use, and leave the Miracle Grow products for the soil. The results speak for themselves.
